Wow, we have billions of lightbulbs today. Wondering what is so wow about it? Think of each of them as a hotspot, that can provide better connectivity speeds. Yes, way better than the Wi-Fi. That is the whole concept behind the technology- Li- Fi. What is this a joke or some sort of science fiction? Luckily it is not. The Li-Fi was tested and it delivered speeds faster than the Wi-Fi. A hundred times faster. How much faster is that? Let us say you could download a high resolution movie just in 30 seconds…
The tests.
The Velmenni an Estonian Startup used light bulb to transmit the data at a speed of 1 Gbps (1 gigabit per second). Now, this is clearly one hundred times faster than the present Wi-Fi. This is the first real-world ever test to be carried out and the laboratory tests show a theoretical speed of 224 GB per second. Maybe, the speed will improve with the improvised tests.
What is Li- Fi? And How does it work?
Li- Fi is just another name referring to the VLC technology (Visible light communication). It can offer bidirectional networked mobile communications at improved speeds. In short, it has close similarities to the Wi-Fi but the Li-Fi is more promising in the case of speed and security. It offers reduced interference.
Working of the Li-Fi.
A stream of constant photons will be emitted by the LED light bulb, when a constant current is applied. The photons emitted at the range of the visible light. Now, when the current is altered slowly, the intensity of the light bulb goes up and down. The LED bulbs are semiconductors and therefore the optical output and current can be driven at high speeds which can be detected by a photo detector device. Photo detectors can convert back to the electrical current. However, it is not visible to the naked human eye and thus it is seamless just as the radio frequency technology.
Who invented the Li-Fi?
Harald Haas, a German physicist is the mastermind behind this idea. He is a professor of mobile communications at the University of Edinburgh and he has been researching on the technology along with a group of people since 2008. His company PureLiFi has already produced two products.
Any drawbacks?
Walls are a hindrance it won’t work through it. If you need a Li-Fi connectivity throughout your home, you need a light bulb in every room.
