Done with the testing, testing the sensors with different cars, in different roads and routes, being towed away couple of times because of being over cautious and slow, certain accidents involving the car, although it was the manual drivers at fault, what now? Well, now there is a little twist in the news. The car is going wireless. Oh, well wait, was it wired before?
Google’s self driving cars are electric cars (not diesel or petrol), which makes it obvious that it has to be charged.
Google is now testing the self-driving cars for wireless charging. The Google company Alphabet is testing some wireless charging systems on the Google self driving cars, the number of systems involved in the test is unclear. Hevo power and Momentum Dynamics are already known to have received the permission to test their charging systems on the car. This test is however not the first, as Google was reported to have tested a wireless charging system even in the year 2011.
But Why?

Wireless charging is definitely an add on when it comes to boosting the demand for a smart Car. This does not seem to be even a matter of concern for Google, as they are not planning to sell the car to individual owners. It’s been on the rumors for quite some time that they want to deploy their car as a means of transportation only. The cars are supposed to be linked to an application, through which the people can book it.
Here is the big idea, the cars do not have pedals or steering, or anything that requires human attendance. Then why does it require a human to plug in its charging cable? The human intervention is not required when the cars can be outfitted with wireless chargers.
When will it become commercially available?
The project began in 2009 and has completed many tests and challenges impressively. Although, we cannot be certain about this, it has been in the news for a while that the Car will be ready for a commercial release by 2020.
